Lab tests have found that some leading brands of spray type (Aerosol) sunscreens contain a deadly chemical called Benzene. Benzene is a carcinogen that causes blood cancer (Leukemia). But it is not the main ingredient used to make sunscreen, but rather a contaminant that is inadvertently mixed during manufacturing in factories.<\/p>\n<p>Chemical Sunscreen Ingredients: There are mainly two types of sunscreens\u2014physical and chemical. Among these, ingredients like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate used in chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. Some animal studies suggest that these may cause endocrine disruption in the body. However, it has not been fully proven that this causes cancer in humans.<\/p>\n<p>Use of Nano-particles: Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are used in very fine nano-forms in today&#8217;s physical sunscreens to prevent white casts when applied to the skin. There is a concern in the scientific world that these nanoparticles can damage cells if inhaled (when sprayed) or penetrated through skin wounds.<\/p>\n<p>Counterfeit and substandard products: Counterfeit sunscreens under the names of branded companies are readily available in the market today. Such cheap creams, which are made without proper quality testing in labs, may contain banned chemicals and preservatives. The deadly ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight directly hitting the skin can damage the DNA in cells and cause skin cancer (Skin Cancer \/ Melanoma).
