Stroke Symptoms Can Be Recognized; Every Moment is Precious!

Getting expert treatment within the first 3 to 4.5 hours of seeing stroke symptoms (the Golden Hour) can reduce disability and save lives. Controlling high blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol, and quitting smoking can reduce the risk of stroke. Even if the symptoms disappear (Transient Ischemic Attack – TIA), it should not be ignored and seen by a doctor.

The ‘FAST’ method used worldwide to recognize the symptoms of stroke is as follows:

1. Face:
When asked to smile, notice if one side of the face droops. Facial weakness is a major symptom of stroke.

2. Arms:
Ask to raise both arms. Unable to raise one arm or sudden weakness in one arm or leg is a sign of stroke.

3. Speech:
Look for slurred speech or difficulty understanding what others are saying.

4. Time:
If you see any of the above symptoms, immediately take the patient to a hospital with stroke treatment facilities.
