When uric acid increases in the blood, it accumulates in the joints as crystals and causes severe joint pain such as ‘gout’. The main reasons that lead to this are:
1. Diet (High-Purine Diet)
The main reason for uric acid to increase is foods rich in purines. Excessive consumption of red meat (beef, mutton), organ meats (liver, kidney), and some types of seafood (chara, mackerel, shrimp) increases uric acid.
2. Sweet drinks and fructose
Sugar, especially artificially sweetened soft drinks and sodas, can cause uric acid to increase. The fructose contained in these accelerates the production of uric acid in the body.
3. Obesity
The body is likely to produce more uric acid in people who are overweight. Additionally, obesity slows down the functioning of the kidneys and hinders the excretion of uric acid.
4. Alcohol
Consumption of alcohol, especially beer, can increase uric acid. Alcohol inhibits the process of excretion of uric acid from the body.
5. Kidney problems
When the kidneys are unable to filter the blood properly, uric acid builds up in the body. This can later lead to joint pain and kidney stones.
6. Heredity and medications
If someone in the family has uric acid problems, it can be hereditary. In addition, the use of certain drugs to lower BP (Diuretics) and aspirin may also increase uric acid levels.
Things to keep in mind to reduce uric acid:
Drink water: Drinking 3-4 liters of water a day will help eliminate uric acid through urine.
Lemon water: Studies say that vitamin C in lemon juice can help reduce uric acid.
Whole grains: Include foods high in fiber
