Liver Transplant: When and Why? 5 Important Reasons to Know

One of the most important organs in the body, the liver, is one of the most important organs in the body, and it has to undergo a transplant surgery when its functions completely stop (Liver Failure). The main reasons leading to this are:

Cirrhosis: This is a condition in which the liver shrinks and hardens due to long-term damage to the liver. Alcoholism and hepatitis infections are the main factors leading to this. Liver transplantation becomes inevitable when cirrhosis worsens.

Chronic Hepatitis B & C: Chronic infection of the liver due to a viral infection destroys liver cells over time. When this reaches a stage where it cannot be treated, a new liver may have to be transplanted.

Fatty Liver Diseases (NAFLD/NASH): Excessive fat accumulation in the liver due to lifestyle changes can lead to liver inflammation and dysfunction. Obesity and diabetes are the main culprits.

Liver Cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma): In cases where cancer affecting the liver has not spread to other organs, removing the diseased liver and replacing it with a new one can help cure the disease.

Genetic and immune causes: Inborn metabolic disorders or a condition in which the body’s immune system destroys its own liver (Autoimmune Hepatitis) can also lead to liver transplantation.
