A sore throat is something that many people experience when the weather changes or when drinking cold drinks. It is not just an inconvenience, but can also be a symptom of other changes in the body. The main causes are:
Viral Infection: Viruses are responsible for 90% of sore throats. You may experience swelling and pain in the throat as part of the common cold and influenza (Flu). If it is a viral infection, it is often accompanied by a runny nose and cough.
Bacterial Infection (Strep Throat): An infection caused by the bacteria ‘Group A Streptococcus’ can cause a severe sore throat. This is a condition that is more painful than a viral infection and requires antibiotics.
Allergies: Allergies to dust mites, pollen, and pet dander can cause itching and pain in the throat. Post-nasal drip (fluid from the nose into the throat) due to allergies can also cause discomfort.
Acidity (GERD): Acid reflux can cause chronic sore throat. Burning and pain in the throat, especially when waking up in the morning, can be a symptom of acidity.
Dry air and pollution: Low humidity in the air and sitting in AC rooms for long periods of time can dry out the throat and cause pain. Smoking, chemical odors, and heavy air pollution are also causes.
