Dark spots on the face, such as on the forehead, cheeks, or on both sides of the nose, are called dark spots. This is caused by the excessive production of a substance called ‘melanin’ in the skin. The main causes are:
Sunlight (UV Rays): The biggest enemy of dark spots is sunlight. The ultraviolet rays in the sun stimulate the cells that produce melanin in the skin and make the spots darker.
Hormonal changes: Hormonal changes that occur in women during pregnancy are the main cause of dark spots. This is also called the ‘mask of pregnancy’. Menopause and the use of birth control pills can also lead to this.
Stress: Excessive stress disrupts the hormonal balance in the body. This can cause increased pigmentation in the skin.
Poor quality cosmetics: Using creams or bleaching products that contain strong chemicals can damage the skin and cause dark spots.
Heredity: If someone in the family has dark spots, others are more likely to get them. It may appear faster in people with certain skin types.
