The internal organs and intestines of our abdomen are held in place by strong muscles and walls (Abdominal Wall). But when for some reason these muscle walls become weak or have holes, the internal organs (especially parts of the intestines) push out through this weak layer. This condition is scientifically called Hernia. It is usually found in the abdomen, thighs (Inguinal Hernia) or in the navel (Umbilical Hernia). Here are the 5 main scientific reasons behind hernia:
Congenital Weakness of Muscles: In some people, the muscles in the abdominal walls are naturally weak at birth. An example of this is Umbilical Hernia seen in children. As the muscles do not fully contract as they grow, this area becomes weak and pushes the intestine out.
Chronic Coughing: People with chronic, persistent coughs (such as those with COPD or allergies) are at higher risk of developing a hernia. When you cough continuously, the intra-abdominal pressure increases repeatedly. This pressure can weaken the abdominal muscles and cause a hernia.
Straining during Bowel/Urinary movements: People with chronic constipation may strain to have a bowel movement. Similarly, older men may have to strain to urinate due to an enlarged prostate (BPH). This constant pressure on the lower abdomen can tear the muscles in the thighs and cause an inguinal hernia.
Heavy Lifting and Lack of Exercise: Lifting heavy weights suddenly without proper technique can cause sudden damage to the abdominal muscles. Even if those who do heavy weight lifting in the gym do not use belts, construction workers can also tear the muscles and cause hernias when lifting heavy weights. This is also due to the fact that the abdominal muscles become very loose due to lack of exercise.
Obesity and Pregnancy: When the body weight increases gradually, there is constant tension and pressure on the abdominal muscles. Similarly, during pregnancy, as the uterus enlarges in women, the abdominal walls become stretched and weakened. Women who have given birth more than once are more likely to develop hernias in the navel area. Incisional Hernia is another cause.
