Blood glucose increases! 5 main scientific reasons behind diabetes or sugar

Diabetes or sugar is a major health problem that is most common among Malayalis today and leads to many other deadly diseases. When the carbohydrates in the food we eat are digested and converted into glucose, the body needs a hormone called insulin to transport it to the cells. Malfunctions in this insulin system lead to diabetes. Here are the 5 main scientific reasons behind the occurrence of diabetes:

Insulin Resistance – Type 2 Diabetes: The most important scientific reason for diabetes is insulin resistance. In this condition, although the pancreas produces enough insulin, the cells of the body cannot use it properly. As a result, glucose is unable to enter the cells and it builds up in the blood, causing the sugar level to rise.

Beta Cell Destruction – Type 1 Diabetes: This is a condition in which the immune system of our body directly attacks and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin due to a false message. This is called Type 1 Diabetes. The reason behind this is that the body does not produce enough insulin. This is mostly seen in children and young people.

Obesity & Visceral Fat: Gradual increase in body weight and accumulation of fat in the abdomen (visceral fat) doubles the risk of diabetes. When fat cells become excessive, they release certain chemicals that interfere with the action of insulin. This is the main cause of insulin resistance in the cells.

Genetics & Family History: Heredity plays a major role in the development of diabetes. If parents or other close family members have diabetes, then the next generation of individuals are more likely to have insulin resistance or pancreatic weakness due to genetic reasons.

Poor diet and lack of exercise (Sedentary Lifestyle): Excessive consumption of rice, flour desserts, fast food, and sugary drinks can quickly increase blood glucose. Also, when you get used to sitting in front of the computer for long periods of time and not doing much physical activity, the body does not use glucose as energy, which leads to diabetes.
