Is your hair full of hair? 5 main scientific reasons behind excessive hair loss

It is a natural process to lose 50 to 100 strands of hair from the scalp every day. But when more hair falls out and new hair does not grow, it becomes a major health problem. The main reason for this is the weakening of the hair follicles, which are the roots of our hair. Here are the 5 main scientific reasons behind excessive hair loss:

Hormonal Imbalance & DHT: The main reason for hair loss in men and women is hormonal imbalance. When the male hormone testosterone is converted to DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) due to genetic reasons, it shrinks the hair roots and causes hair loss. This is called Male Pattern Baldness. In addition, hormonal changes that occur in women after childbirth and during menopause also increase hair loss.

Chronic Thyroid Diseases and PCOD: The thyroid gland plays a major role in regulating the growth of cells and the hormonal system in our body. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can weaken the hair roots. In addition, PCOD / PCOS (cysts in the ovaries) in women can also cause severe hair loss and premature graying.

Nutritional Deficiencies & Anemia: 90 percent of hair is made up of a protein called Keratin. When there is a lack of protein in the diet, hair growth stops. Along with this, when there is anemia due to iron deficiency in the body, oxygen does not reach the hair roots properly. Deficiency of vitamin B7 (biotin), vitamin D3 and zinc can also cause hair loss.

Stress & Telogen Effluvium: Severe stress, depression, and sudden emotional trauma increase the hormone ‘Cortisol’ in the body. This pushes the hair in the growth phase (Anagen phase) to the shedding phase (Telogen phase). Scientifically, this is called Telogen Effluvium. This is why severe hair loss occurs two months after a high fever (such as dengue fever, Covid) comes and goes.

Dandruff & Scalp Infection: Severe dandruff occurs when fungi of the Malassezia species grow in the excessive oiliness of the scalp. When dandruff occurs, the scalp itches and swells, which reduces the strength of the hair roots. The use of unscientific chemical shampoos can also damage the hair.
