People with asthma and allergies should be careful; avoid these foods!

To maintain lung health and prevent suffocation, limit or avoid the following foods as much as possible:

1. Artificial dyes and preservatives (Sulphites)
Sulphites, which are found in packaged juices, dried fruits, and pickles, can aggravate asthma symptoms. Chemicals added to food to give color and flavor can cause irritation to the airways.

2. Cold drinks and ice cream
Consuming excessively cold water, soft drinks, and ice cream can cause the muscles in the airways to contract (bronchospasm). This can quickly cause suffocation.

3. Gassy foods
Gas in the stomach can put pressure on the diaphragm and make breathing difficult.

Foods to avoid: Cabbage, legumes, onions, and carbonated drinks.

4. Excessive salt
Excessive salt consumption can cause swelling in the body. Studies suggest that this can increase the amount of fluid in the lungs and make it harder to breathe.

5. Processed Meat
The nitrates contained in processed meats such as sausage and bacon are harmful to asthma patients.

6. Certain allergic foods
Depending on the individual, certain foods can cause allergies. Avoid milk, eggs, seafood (shrimp, crab), and peanuts if you experience shortness of breath.

To improve lung health:
Vitamin D: Exposure to sunlight and foods rich in vitamin D can increase immunity.

Omega-3: Omega-3 found in fish and nuts can help reduce inflammation in the airways.

It is a good idea for people with allergies to identify which foods cause discomfort and keep a ‘food diary’. Along with food, protect yourself from smoke, dust, and pet dander. If shortness of breath becomes severe, do not hesitate to use inhalers and seek proper medical attention.
