When you have chest pain, it is important to avoid self-medication and find the real cause. If the pain is due to gas, it will go away if you change your diet. However, people with hereditary heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure should not take the pain lightly. An ECG can be done to ensure the health of the heart.
The causes can vary depending on the location and type of pain in your chest. The main reasons are:
1. Gastritis or Acidity
This is the most common cause of chest pain. You may feel a burning sensation and pain in the middle or upper part of your chest. This is often caused by stomach gas moving up (Acid Reflux).
2. Musculoskeletal Pain
This is pain in the bones or muscles of your chest. You may feel this pain when lifting heavy objects, turning suddenly, or after exercising. If the pain increases when you press with your hand, it is most likely muscle pain.
3. Anxiety/Stress
When you are extremely afraid or tense, you may feel a heavy or stabbing pain in your chest. Difficulty breathing is also a symptom of this.
4. Respiratory problems
When you have a bad cold, a chronic cough, or an infection, you may feel pain on the sides of your chest when you breathe in or cough.
5. Heart pain (Angina)
When blood flow to your heart is reduced, you may feel a heaviness and tightness in your chest. This pain usually starts on the left side of your chest and may spread to your left arm or neck.
