To keep food fresher for longer, here’s how to store it:
1. Keep food items at a distance
Cold air needs to circulate freely inside the fridge. Stuffing items will block the air circulation and reduce the temperature of the fridge. This will cause food to spoil faster.
2. Separate cooked and uncooked food
Store cooked foods (curries, rice) on the upper shelves, and vegetables and fruits on the lower shelves. When storing raw meat or fish, they should be sealed in separate boxes to prevent water from dripping onto other foods.
3. Do not put hot food directly
Putting hot food in the fridge will increase the temperature inside the fridge. This will overwork the fridge’s compressor and increase the current charge. Only put the food inside after it has cooled down thoroughly.
4. Where should you store eggs and milk?
Most people store eggs and milk in the door of the refrigerator. But the door is the coldest part of the refrigerator. Therefore, it is safer to store milk and eggs on the inner shelves of the refrigerator (Main Shelves).
5. Leafy greens and vegetables
Removing greens from plastic wrap and wrapping them in paper will help reduce humidity and keep them fresh longer. Store vegetables in the bottom drawer of the refrigerator (Crisper Drawer).
Some things not to forget:
Keep closed: Keep all foods closed in airtight containers. This will prevent bad odors from forming in the refrigerator.
Cleaning: Clean the refrigerator at least once a week and remove old items.
